458 HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY. ================================== ison & Indianapolis Railroad; the former is located near where the railroad crosses the West Fork of the Muscatatauk River. A water-mill was built near this place more than sixty years ago, by a man by the name of Langdon, and it was at this mill that the early settlers of Washington Township got most of their grind- ing done. Very little business has been done at this place, al- though there has been a store kept there for many years. Chest- nut Ridge is about two miles further north, near the line dividing Jackson and Washington Townships. The business that has been done heretofore is now practically abandoned. Saw-mills which have been operated in the section were the most important industry, and consequently a great deal of lumber has been shipped from this point. In the early part of the thirties John Love kept a small stock of goods at his residence on Chestnut Ridge, and James Shewmaker manufactured a sufficient quantity of whisky for home consumption.
