Jackson County, Indiana, History
& Picture Archive

Using the Jackson County, Indiana, Digital History Archive ... Pictures Most pictures are identified only briefly at this time. More information is available about some (even most) of them, although in many cases the information must be gathered from a variety of sources. Additional documented information is welcome about any of them. Additions, corrections or inquiries may be sent to the project coordinator. Clicking on the Pictures link will take users to a subject list. Clicking on a subject will bring up a list of captions for the pictures currently on display. Remember that pictures currently are filed only under one subject but may show a variety of subjects. Books Directories currently have page images only and are not searchable. Some of the images also need to be resized for easier Web access and currently may take a long time to load. This will change as work continues on the project. The main sections of the directories are noted in the clickable tables of content so that users may go to pages near the ones they want to view and then move backward or forward a page at a time. Users also may enter a page number and click "go" to reach a particular page. Changing the number of pages to be viewed on each screen also may make navigation easier. The user can then scroll through several pages without reloading. The text of the Jackson County and biography sections of the 1886 Brant & Fuller History of Jackson County are searchable. Thumbnails of page images will appear to the right of the text and clicking on the thumbnail will bring up a larger page image. (At this time only the page images are available for the Indiana History section of the book and it is not searchable.) Some of the scanned text may contain errors as a result of scanning imperfections from optical character recognition, although many of those errors were corrected during editing. Users questioning the accuracy of the text may be able to verify the information by bringing up the page image. To search the 1886 History, click on the link to the search page and key in the word or words for which you want to search. Click on the search button. The page results will be listed on the search screen and you can click to go to a particular page. You then can use the browser's back button to return to the search results and view other pages or you can return to the main page of the archive. Do not search for frequently used words such as the, an, and, of that may appear on every page. Choose one or two keywords or part of a word but at least three letters. Entering letters in the search blank will bring up all instances of that combination of letters, even if the letters are only part of a word. Example: searching the letters son will bring up Jackson as well as references to male offspring. Some words are entered in the original text with a variety of spellings. Using a truncated version of the word will bring up all that match that part of the beginning of the word, as well as instances within the word. Example: searching wed will bring up all spellings of Weddell and its variations, Weddleville, plowed and so on, in addition to references to nuptials. If more than one word is entered, the search will bring up any page that has either word. Example: searching for John Reno will bring up all pages on which either John or Reno appears. A better choice might be searching only on the word Reno. To easily find a word or series of letters within a page, use the browser's edit/find feature, key in the letters and look for the highlighted sections. If you have trouble with the search feature, please e-mail the project coordinator or call 812.522.3412 ext 224. |
